Brief Introduction to First Time to America

To tell you the truth, what I have experienced in the last week, or seven days’ time in America, makes me feel that I have been away from my hometown for a year. I don’t mean anything negative when I say that. I mean I have come across as many different things as what might take me a year or more to go through back in Lijiang: my first impression of Chicago and Madison, coldness and warm-heartedness, overcoming jet leg, finding my way through University of Wisconsin-Madison, accidental health breakdown, looking for lodging, signing a contract, dealing with my budget, trying to contact my family, registration for community library, my Spanish-speaking room-mate, my first Chinese meal in Madison, biking in Madison, traffic in Madison, etc. plenty of them. Maybe life in Lijiang had been too easy, too comfortable, and too familiar to me that after many years, when I look back at what I have gone through, I feel it’s been a short time. Life is but once, very precious. Sometimes I fear that it will elapse too quickly before we can achieve anything valuable, unless we find ways to hold on to it.

Life is an adventure, yes, it should be an adventure. Some people back in my hometown said that I was crazy to choose to study in America at my age since I had to give up a lot as an individual. Now I know for sure that I made a good decision to come here. I have effectively extended my life, that’s how I feel now anyway. I feel that I’m a lot more useful to be able to share all this new experience with my students, my friends, and my family so that their life can be enriched too. I hope that my experience would help those who are planning to come to America and Madison in particular to become better prepared so that they would feel living and studying here more enjoyable. Furthermore, I hope that my experience will encourage more people to live a different life once in a while, Chinese people to America and UW people to Lijiang. You will definitely find it worth the while. Oh, before I forget, I’m going to report all this in English, and all materials and conversations will be in authentic English, a real environment of the English language, which is something I feel so eager to share with my EFL students back in my hometown. So, please join me, eat with me, live with me, learn with me, grow together with me, enjoy the life and even suffer with me, if I have any difficulties to deal with at all, who knows. I bet that’s gonna be an exciting experience and that you will never regret spending your time together with me. See you next time.
